Frequently asked questions about polarized sunglasses

How do I know if my sunglasses are polarized?
There's a simple way to test to see if your sunglasses are polarized. Just look through the glasses at your computer monitor. Then turn the sunglasses around as if they were the hands of a clock facing you. If the intensity of the reflection doesn't change with respect to what you see through the window, they are not polarized. If they are polarized, you will see your computer screen go dark.

Why are polarized sunglasses better than normal tinted sunglasses?
Normal sunglasses only decrease the intensity of light and make things seem a little darker. Polarized sunglasses can selectively eliminate the reflection from light coming from above the water surface. Polarized sunglasses are one of the most important tools for a fishermen. They wear them often to filter out surface glare so they can see fish and underwater structure.
Do polarized sunglasses help see fish and rocks below the water surface?
Yes. They eliminate glare by reducing its blinding effect. Also, they selectively reduce other reflections from objects above water, including clouds and even the sky. Finally, light coming from under water is slightly polarized in the vertical plane (polarized on transmission). The end effect is that the water seems more transparent. This only works if you look at the water at an angle and not straight down.

Are polarized glasses good for driving?
Absolutely. Polarized lenses are great for driving because they filter out glare that is reflecting off the road and the hood of your car. This is especially important when the hood is wet from rain and the sun is starting to come out. It's important to have good polarized lenses when driving because obviously it's important to see oncoming traffic and other road hazards. Also , those annoying bright reflections of the sun on the cars ahead can sometimes be attenuated a good deal. They tend to be horizontally polarized, thus perfect for vertically polarized sunglasses.  The reason is that the surfaces that you see on the car in front of you (the back window, the trunk door, and even the roof) will be slanted towards you, while the sun will be more or less aligned in the vertical plane through both cars (if not you wouldn't see its reflection from those surfaces) Other uses for good sunglasses would be polarized sunglasses for bicycling, hiking, boating, skiing, surfing and jet skiing. It's important to have good protective eyewear for these and other types of outdoor activities. UV protection is also important when choosing a pair of polarized sunglasses.
FishGillz Sunglass Company makes a great pair of polarized sunglasses that are lightweight and very comfortable. FishGillz also feature, UV400 Protection, a high performance wrap around design and gator grip temple locks to prevent slippage.
