Fishing Sunglasses -What to Look For

Everyone knows that polarized lenses are important for fishing. What other features should I look for when choosing a pair of Fishing Sunglasses?

Comfort
When choosing your pair of polarized sunglasses, consider getting a very light weight frame that does not put pressure points on the side of your temples or bridge of your nose. Since fishermen spend long hours in the sun, sometimes from sun-up to sundown, comfort is a very important factor to consider. Bulky, uncomfortable sunglasses can be annoying when wearing polarized sunglasses for six hours or more at a time. Heavy frames that do not fit properly can also leave red, irritating marks on the bridge of your nose.

Fishing Sunglasses -Non -Slip Frames
Another factor to consider when choosing your polarized sunglasses is choosing a pair of non-slip frames that will not slip or slide off your face. This can be very annoying when you have to constantly be adjusting or pushing your polarized sunglasses back onto your face. When choosing your polarized sunglasses, try to find a pair that has a curvature that conforms to the shape of your face, or has the flexibilty in the frames where they can be adjusted for a perfect fit.

Fishing Sunglasses - Peripheral Vision
It's important to be able to see easily in all directions when wearing your polarized sunglasses. A lot of fishermen today have high powered fishing or bass boats that can travel at speeds of 70 MPH or more. When traveling at these high speeds, it's very important to have 100% peripheral vision to see other boats coming from all directions. Polarized sunglasses that have limited vision can be dangerous when traveling at high speeds. Also, good peripheral vision is important when searching for schools of fish or dolphin when ocean fishing. When choosing your polarized sunglasses, make sure you get a pair that has a wrap around type frame that provides 100% peripheral vision.

Durability
Another factor that fishermen tend to ignore when choosing fishing sunglasses is durability of the frames, especially the finish. A good pair of polarized sunglasses should have a UV resistant coating on the frames, which will protect them from the intense sunlight that they are exposed to every day. Moreover, a good pair of polarized sunglasses should have a salt-water fade resistant barrier. Around water your polarized sunglasses can be exposed to these elements, especially abrasive salt water, so having a durable finish is important.

Floating Feature
Most boaters and anglers have dropped expensive polarized sunglasses overboard only to watch them sink to the bottom, so having a pair of polarized sunglasses with a floating feature is another important benefit. There are various floating polarized sunglasses on the market, but look for a pair that float without the use of foam pads or other types of attached floatation devices. Pads that are glued to the insides of the frames can be bulky or cumbersome and at times can restrict vision. Also over time, the foam pads that are glued to the inside of the frames can peel or fall off after being exposed to water too many times. Good quality polarized sunglasses will have an actual floating frame, that does not need any additional floatation devices to make them float in the event that they get dropped in the water.

Cost
Sunglasses today can be very costly, especially if buying some of the more well known name brands. If you have a tendency to lose things, or tend not to put your fishing sunglasses in their case, you may want to consider buying a lower priced pair of fishing sunglasses. Some of the more expensive pair of polarized sunglasses can cost between $200-$300 per pair or even more, so cost is another factor to consider when choosing your fishing sunglasses.
